Termination of Child Coverage Due to Age

Generally speaking, children may remain on the supplement plan as long as they remain on TRICARE.

Some children remain on TRICARE longer than other children, due to disability, full-time student status and/or TRICARE Young Adult (TYA).

The TRICARE Young Adult (TYA) program allows qualifying children to remain on the plan until age 26. For this reason, our system does not terminate children until age 26.

The family may contact us to request earlier termination of a child. Letters are sent when children attain certain ages to remind the family of the rules.

Continuation is offered to disabled dependents over age 26 with continuing TRICARE coverage. Members must submit proof that the TRICARE coverage is being continued for disability. Tricare sends the insured a letter of coverage they will send to us. Normally, this letter is created every 90 days and mailed to the insureds home. Once they have the letter they can share the letter with us to continue the child coverage.

Selmanco will mail a letter to the family when the policy is scheduled to terminate, this is simply a reminder to the family to send us a copy of the letter.

Eligibility Exclusions for Dependent Children:

  • Any dependent not covered by TRICARE
  • Incapacitated dependents, 21 or older, (23 if a full-time student) not currently enrolled in the TRICARE Supplement Plan
  • Dependent children between the ages of 21-23 who are not a full-time student or covered by TRICARE Young Adult
  • Dependent children between the ages of 23-26 who are not enrolled in TRICARE Young Adult

Children already enrolled in the supplement and over the age of 26 may continue the coverage beyond the age of 26 if they are still qualified for the primary and they enroll before the 26th birthday.
