TRICARE supplement coverage automatically ends when the participant reaches age 65. At this point, the person becomes eligible for Medicare and TRICARE for Life. A supplement is no longer needed.
Supplement insureds who turn 65 are terminated in our system. Retail insureds terminate on the exact birthday. Corporate insureds terminate on the first of the month after the birthday. They are notified by letter in advance of the termination date.
If the insured is ineligible for Medicare or premium-free Medicare, he/she may continue the supplement coverage beyond age 65. To continue, the insured must provide the Notice of Disallowance, Notice of Award, or any official letter/document from the Social Security Administration. The termination letter will provide instructions for this.
If the insured lives overseas, he/she may send us a written request to continue coverage. The termination letter will provide instructions for this. The current policy needs to be rekeyed to be able to continue past age 65.
They need to be set up under a special plan for insureds that live overseas. So the existing policy up to age 65 should be terminated. To accomplish that please send an email to billing workflow and tricareenrollment and request a term and re-key. Please explain although the insured is age 65 or older they will continue with our supplement because they live in (Germany) for example. The policy terms and re-keys to allow an "NT" indicator to be added to the new policy. The "NT" indicator will prevent the termination of the supplement for those age 65 and over and those living overseas.
If the insured has Medicare Part A but is not eligible for Medicare Part B and will continue with “regular” TRICARE instead of TRICARE for Life, he/she may send us a written request to continue coverage.
Covered dependents who have not yet become eligible for Medicare will continue on the TRICARE supplement policy. The termination letter will explain this.
