Portability – Overview
Aetna Portability is an employer-elected option to continue life insurance as a Term Life policy. On most plans, the benefit amount reduces with age. Rates increase gradually with age. Most plans end at age 99, although some exceptions exist where coverage terminates at an earlier age.
SelmanCo. does not handle new enrollment, we currently handle existing insureds.
Port Rules:
- Port is employer elected.
- If the group has a Port option, it may apply only to the employee or it may apply to the employee, spouse, and children.
- If the group has a Port option, it may apply only to basic or supplemental plans, or it may apply to both.
- Generally speaking, spouses and children may not port alone – they must port with the employee.
- Cannot port if ill or injured and away from work at the time of coverage termination. This rule does not apply to employees whose group contract/situs state is New York. When the member is ineligible due to illness/injury, then the spouse and/or child(ren) are also ineligible for Port.
- Employee and spouse must be one year younger than the Port plan termination age in order to elect Port.
- To be eligible for Port, the child must be at least 12 months away from the age at which he or she will no longer meet the group plan’s definition of a dependent child.
- Cannot port if coverage under the group policy is canceled and replaced by like coverage under another policy.
- Cannot port if coverage under the group policy is canceled because the employer has gone out of business.
- Cannot port when coverage has reduced but the member’s plan remains active with the group.
- Active military status does not affect Port eligibility.
